walmart profits from forced labor in louisiana

Walmart: Stop Profiting from Forced Labor in Louisiana

You’re a fool if you think this happens in just Louisiana….add California, Alabama, Florida, Texas, etc…anywhere where there is agricultural cultivation…jyeah

diegueno:

Ana Rosa Diaz is a 40-year-old mother of four from Municipio Hidalgo, Mexico. Ana came to Louisiana as a guestworker to peel crawfish for a Walmart supplier called C.J.’s Seafood.

While Walmart has profited from Ana’s work, Ana’s employer has subjected her and her fellow guestworkers to forced labor. They have been forced to work up to 24-hour shifts with no overtime pay. Supervisors have threatened to beat them with shovels to make them work faster.

Workers live in trailers across from the boss’s house, and are under constant surveillance. The supervisors enter their trailers without warning, and threaten firing if workers leave after 9 p.m.

And when Ana and her fellow workers tried to stand up to the boss, he threatened violence against their families in Mexico.

“He said, ‘As a friend I can be very good, but you don’t want to know me as an enemy. I have contacts with good people and bad people, and I know where all your families live. I can find you no matter where you hide,’” Ana said. “We were terrified.”

“We want to work,” Ana said. “We need to support our families. We just want to be treated like human beings.”

The workers joined the National Guestworker Alliance and decided to go on strike. The boss refused to take back his threats against their families, so now they’re taking their demands to Walmart.

Walmart’s Standards for Suppliers forbid forced labor on the Walmart supply chain. But Walmart is profiting from forced labor in Louisiana. And now it’s attempting a cover-up without having even spoken with the whistle-blowers who are on strike.

Walmart needs to show its suppliers that it won’t tolerate forced labor. We’re demanding that Walmart:

  1. Cancel its contract with C.J.’s Seafood to show that it won’t profit from forced labor in Louisiana.
  2. Sit down with the striking workers immediately as a first step toward a real investigation — rather than a cover-up.
  3. Sign the NGA’s Guestworker Dignity Standards to prevent forced labor and guarantee civil and labor rights for guestworkers across the Walmart supply chain.

The Change.Org petition to have charges against CeCe dropped.

Reblogging again for the petition link AGAIN, because it makes me really angry that this has been going on for so long and the petition still has less than 10,000 signatures. I feel like everyone has to know about CeCe McDonald right now, but clearly not.

Sign the petition. Lets get justice for Trayvon Martin.

If you care about human beings and their right to walk freely down the street without facing harm… if you care about human beings regardless of color, sex, pgp, or creed and their murderers running free…. if you think its wrong to hold someone else’s life as less than simply because he is black than sign the petition for Trayvon Martin. sign it because you are aware this world isn’t fair. you are aware that being a person of color in this world means that you may be shot and killed and your white murderer runs free. sign this because no parent should have to bury their child especially because of racism. Justice for Trayvon Martin.

Sign the petition, share the petition and call and email these people and tell them to release the 911 tapes and arrest Trayvon’s MURDERER

Americans protest fracking as Obama cheers for it
At Tuesday’s State of the Union address, US President Barack Obama did not seem to see a problem with fracking.
As fossil fuels are used up at record speeds, Obama announced from Washington this week, “We have a supply of natural gas that can last America nearly 100 years, and my administration will take every possible action to safely develop this energy.” According to the president, the fracking industry could create more than 600,000 jobs by the end of the decade and would have in place a clean alternative to oil processing. He proposed an “all-out, all-of-the-above” policy to tackle the country’s resources on all fronts in the best way possible, but while he suggested that fracking was the be-all to end-all answer to America’s energy woes, the reality is that rampant drilling could cause some serious repercussions.
In addition to adding carcinogens into the atmosphere, scientists earlier this month finally linked fracking to an outbreak of earthquakes in the state of Ohio. The Youngstown, OH region saw 11 small tremors in a matter of months after a year of drilling, prompting an investigation by specialists — and the results were far from favorable.
“This one year of pumping is a pulse that has been pushed into the ground, and it’s going to be spreading out for at least a year,” John Armbruster of Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory tells the Associated Press.

fracking causes earth quakes… or earth distruction. as well as dirtying clean natural water… which is illegal to collect and drink on your own anyways, but i digress. we live in a society in which we only give a fuck when its happening to us… and the politicians know this. they also know that when they slowly erode your rights whether its for capitalistic venture or just to see if you notice that by the time you fight what is already made LEGAL its too late. its harder. its supported by jobs now. its supported by lobbyists from this new industry that are also contributing to politicians reelection funds.
its like taking a stroll down a mountain while you watch other people tumble down the same mountain, then a politician taking the stroll with you trips your selfish ass down the mountain and no one is there to help you up. because you were silent while people were getting pitched down the side.

we have to stop this shit before its too late. even if its not in your backyard… once you allow it ANYWHERE it will inevitably end up in  your backyard.

48 HOURS LEFT TO STOP UGANDA'S ANTI-GAY BILL, DEATH PENALTY INCLUDED!!!

tumblemesoftly:

Update: May 9 2011 It’s monstrous — thousands of Ugandans could face the death penalty — just for being gay. On Wednesday, Parliament may pass a law that punishes homosexuality with death – we have 48 hours to act.

We’ve stopped this bill before, and we can do it again. Ugandan President Museveni is scared of losing valuable international aid from the West — after a massive international outcry last year, he stopped the bill from coming to a vote. But political unrest is mounting in Uganda, and religious extremists in Parliament are hoping confusion and violence in the streets will distract the international community from a second push to pass this hate-filled law. We can show them that the world is still watching. If we block the vote for two more days until Parliament closes, the bill will expire forever.

With 48 hours to go, every moment counts. Over half a million of us have already joined the call — let’s get to one million voices against Uganda’s gay death penalty in the next 48 hours — sign now then spread the word about this campaign!”

For those of you who aren’t aware, a piece of legislation known in America as the “Kill The Gays” bill has been making its way through the Ugandan Parliament, and may be voted on very soon. Rather than signing an internet petition, why not email or call someone who might have the power to effect…
